Open Studio- Sidhu Moose Wala Mural!
Thank you all for the incredible support and contribution in making the Sidhu Moose Wala tribute mural for the City of Brampton!
The response to the final mural has been overwhelmingly positive. The city has now picked up the panels for installation onsite at the Susan Fennel Community Center.
While we await the official mural unveiling, I’m happy to share the OMNI news coverage below along with a process video that includes some of you who stopped by and helped paint!

When: Saturday, December 10th & 17th from 11am- 4pm (due to lots of interest, we’re opening up 1 hour time slots to choose from)
Why: It’s a project that I know so many of you are excited about- and because of Sidhu Moose Wala’s legacy as an Artist and cultural significance, I would love for you, the community, to be involved.

Template pictured below, with the final drawing pictured on the right. In the workshop, I teach patterning, detailing and important concepts like composition and contrast to create an intricate and mesmerizing work of art.

Zentangle can look intimidating at first, but when you break it down, it’s just a matter of three steps: drawing the general shape, drawing in guidelines and filling those guidelines with patterns.
In fact, here’s an artwork masterpiece created by a student. She drew this within a few hours with just paper and pen by following the instructions in my zentangle workshop. You can too!

Jasmin Pannu is an Award-Winning multi-disciplinary Artist with 80+ murals in the Toronto area. Her artworks have had the honour of exhibiting at a few of North America’s largest galleries such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum.
Outside of creating new works, Jasmin Pannu teaches art workshops and gives artist talks for clients ranging from the Peel District School Board to the municipality and private clients.

NBA Artwork Commissions
I enjoy watching basketball (go Raptors!), so it’s been pretty fun working on NBA art projects over the years. I’ve done everything from live painting at the Raptors first-ever art exhibition at Live Nation, to working with companies like Inkbox and Martk’d in creating NBA inspired artwork and painting basketball murals for both the city and private residences.
I thought I’d bring a few of those projects together in this blog post- especially with the 2020 NBA season (finally!) around the corner.
Art of the North - Live Painting and working with Martkd and Inkbox
Live Nation hosted the first-ever Raptors Art Exhibition.
During ‘Art of the North’ I had the pleasure of working with Martkd, I hand painted shoes at the Adidas booth which were later auctioned on the Raptors app with all proceeds going to the MLSE foundation.
I also worked with Inkbox and drew hundreds of Raptors inspired temporary tattoos on guests.
Before the event I took some time to draw these Kawhi and Raptors inspired temporary tattoos on myself:
Kobe Bryant Murals by Jasmin Pannu
One of my favourite NBA artworks has been the creation of these Kobe Bryant murals for a private residence. The whole family is big fans of Kobe and everything he represents, so these two staircase murals started an art wall to pay ode to the titan.
At over 3ft each, these murals are statement pieces, capturing his passion and work ethic, bringing inspiration to the family and the home.
Canada Day Celebrations - 2019 Raptors Championships
With Canada Day happening just a few weeks after Raptors became the 2019 Champions, I pivoted a pop-up mural project that I had in the works to pay ode to the victory.
Happening in Chinguacousy Park, Brampton, the city’s Canada Day celebrations included this 6x8ft mural, an opportunity for children and families to take photos.
Through the day, hundreds of visitors came by to take shots and show their national pride.
Raptors Kids’ Room Mural
To match a young Raptors fan’s enthusiasm, I was commissioned to paint this mural for her room. She was so excited!

This project marks my 4th commissioned artwork with the City of Brampton and it’s an honour to continue to work with the city in which I’ve spent the majority of my life.
Working in the realm of public art gives me the opportunity to create artworks that influence the people and environment, that’s why I love to include the voices of the community.
Here are a few artworks I’ve had the privilege of creating for our city, from a pop-up interactive artwork (where residents added 100+ messages of hope and positivity) on Main street to celebrate Brampton’s Farmer’s Market, to photos opps with murals at Canada Day in Chingcousy Park and Winter Festival gatherings near City Hall.

DIY Mural Tips with Wall Painting Templates
Now, while professional murals require tools, planning and sometimes a certification (always a good idea if you want to pursue being a muralist, anyway), a hobbyist or enthusiast can easily get started on their own mural with just a few tips. I’ll walk you through a few tips to start your very own wall painting as well as provide templates to two of my most popular residential murals: tropical leaves and ombre mountains.

There is little that’s more satisfying to me than watching a space transform after a freshly painted mural.
Murals have the potential to change an entire space’s energy and ambience. Over the years, I’ve painted 80+ murals at a variety of places- from offices to paediatric clinics, playplaces, retail stores and homes. And in every single case, the murals were able to create the kind of experience that blank walls just couldn’t measure up to.
How to Paint a Mural
Now, while professional murals require tools, planning and sometimes a certification (always a good idea if you want to pursue being a muralist, anyway), a hobbyist or enthusiast can easily get started on their own mural with just a few tips.
Mural Painting Tip #1: Consider the Space
Brainstorm your ideas for the space. Start by thinking about things like the purpose of the room: is it somewhere you entertain? relax? Who uses this space most often? What colours and shapes are already present in the room?
These questions will help you create a sketch for your mural. Remember that your wall painting will probably be there for some time, so thinking about how the room is most often used and complementing the existing colours and furniture design will lead to a cohesive look.
In my own living room, I painted this simple tropical leaves mural (scroll down for the template of this design!). I used the space’s plants and accent colours as inspiration for the wall painting design.
Mural Painting Tip #2: Leverage Household Tools
A few tools can go a long way in making a mural look well done.
Chalk- Use chalk to transfer your sketch onto the wall, you can do this a few different ways: you can freehand the sketch onto the wall, you can project your sketch (of course, this requires a projector), or you can create a grid on both your sketch and the wall (using chalk) and accurately replicate the design that way.
Measuring tape and a level- Use a measuring tape to find the middle of the wall, create a grid for your design and make sure the artwork lines up the way you want it to. A level is especially handy in making sure your horizontal lines are straight.
Pro tip: Always use centimeters on the measuring tape! It is difficult to divide inches, so centimeters will be your best bet when scaling your wall painting.
Painter’s Tape and Floor Covering: Tape really will be your best friend. Not only will it keep your lines crisp, it will also make sure edges and other areas don’t accidentally get paint on them. Speaking of keeping things clean, you’ll want to lay down old sheets or plastic to keep paint from dripping to the ground.
In this residential mural, I created a grid with chalk so that I was able to recreate the intricate design into a proportionate and straight wall painting.
Mural Painting Tip #3: Choose Your Materials Wisely
The beauty of residential murals are that the walls usually require no prep work. With most home walls, they’ve already been primed and you have your base coat, so that’s two steps that you get to skip right out the gate.
That also gives you the benefit of being able to choose acrylic paint from your local craft store. Be careful though- you’ll want to be cognisant of whether your paints are matte or glossy. (I would suggest matte for the hobbyist or enthusiast artist).
You’ll also have free reign with the brushes you choose, but be sure to pick in accordance to desired line thickness and texture.
Finally, if you plan on having your mural last some time, pick up a sealant (a matte or glossy spray to match your chosen paints), to keep your colours looking fresh for years to come.
For this children’s Harry Potter themed mural, I used Behr’s wall paint from Home Depot. I chose some paints in matte and others in glossy / metallic to create a whimsical look that plays with the room’s lighting.
Mural Templates
Start the ombre mountains mural by choosing a single colour. From there, you’ll start with the darkest shade at the bottom, and get slightly lighter with every layer, moving upwards. This will give the illusion of depth and emulate the natural beauty of mountains at a distance.
With the tropical leaves design, you can choose to either just outline or to colour in the leaves. A singular colour with outlines will create a minimalist look. Feel free to add shading to create a more realistic aesthetic with the mural, but I recommend keeping your palette to 3 colours or less so that it doesn’t overwhelm the space.
